Pro: Excellent quality. Fits great, nice "grippy" texture, does the job. Doesn't appear to increase internal heat of the Macbook too much (maybe a few degrees Celsius). The Apple logo shines thru the lid in a neat way. True gray/black color - doesn't show any tinge of brown or purple when installed on a white Macbook. If done with some amount of care, doesn't appear to have much of a chance to scratch the Macbook when installing or removing.
Con: Kind of pricey for what amounts to two pieces of plastic. Can be a bit fiddly to install the lower half (make sure you do that right, or you'll have fit problems). Can make the Macbook a bit thick for some tight-fitting, neoprene sleeves (but still usable). Lid won't open quite as far as before, which limits its usefulness on some laptop stands but still OK when used flat on a table or, errr...in your lap.

I bought this black Macally Bookshell for my preteen son's white MacBook after searching quite a bit for a good solution. The black was a nice find as it gives some of the more understated look of the black MacBook, without the then $200 upcharge.
He's had it for about 6 months. He travels with it weekly, going between the homes of both his parents, so it gets a lot of use. With the plastic cases that Apple seemed so fond of for years on their consumer products, something was needed to protect it during daily use. It is also available in a bright red, that I think is supposed to match the Macally logo color.
I had considered a Speck see-through case, but after reading reviews about them scratching the laptop body over time, I decided to look for something else. Function before form. Strangely, the Bookshell isn't offered through Apple stores or online. Someone is missing out on those potential sales.
As others have written the case really is a snap to put on. The texture of the leather is roughly embossed and slightly tacky to the touch. It is kind of resistant to scuffing, and slipping around, but if you need to place it into a slim carrying case, it may become an annoyance. It reminds me a bit of Post-It adhesive.
The fuzzy interior seems like it will cut down on abrasions, and the cover appears to be reasonably durable. No issues yet. All the port and vent cut-outs are where they should be.
Personally, I'd like it less sticky/tacky to the touch, and more like automotive leather. Not super smooth and slippery, but without the tack that it has now. Those who want to show off their Macbook's glowing Apple logo on the back of the display will be disappointed that there isn't a cutout for it. I'd rate it a 4.5 out of 5. It's the best I've found in the price range.

This is the best accessory i've purchased for my mac. I have the black macbook, so all you black macbook owners know the frustrating issue of the fingerprint residue. I like to take good care of my machine, so it is a good thing I purchased this. I dont have to worry about scratches and finger prints and stuff.

The case is a nice leather type. Serves it's purpose and protects the computer. Has a slight grip so you won't get any sliding on smooth surfaces. Only thing is I don't believe it affixes to the macbook in the most snug way, but that could just be my particular case.
All in all a good purchase...
