3 out of 5 stars whats with the price diff?   October 27, 2008

The first time I saw this lap top I knew I had to have it. So I decided to shop around to find a good price. I want a lot of things. But I am no big spender. I used to think that Amazon had everyone licked on prices. I mean I have bought so much stuff from these people, I should take stock in the company. (If the market was not so bad right now). But the thing that shocked me the most was how much it cost here on Amazon. Amazon is charging a whopping $999.83. And the cheapest I found was $749.96 at circuit city. Now I'm not ragging on Amazon in the slightest. You see, you always take your chances buying anything at Circuit City. They have a tendency to never stand behind what they sell. So if they sell you a lemon... good luck getting your money back. I have even found a simple exchange impossible with those people. So I am having a hard time deciding on going the cheaper, dark, goul creaping low road and going with Circuit City or taking my chances with paying more @ Amazon and finding out that they are just as bad as CC. I don't know if I want to know. I like doing business with Amazon. But I'm not rich either.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing looking and functional laptop for the price   October 15, 2008

I agree with TARA T who reviewed this item also. She hits all of the great things about this laptop. Here are a few more:
The wireless has a/g/N capabilities. Built-in web cam. NICE STYLE - no other laptop looks like it! The unit is light for having a 16 inch screen - only 7.5 lbs. Duo core 2.0! 4GB of ram makes a huge difference. For less than $700 you can't go wrong. Voice recognition is really cool - you can control the laptop just by talking to it. It is very nice if you don't like to type in Word. I love the look of this thing. It is so Trek like! The feel of the checkered palm rest is nice and the touch pad blends in. The touch pad has a scroll bar on it too!
Here is what I have not liked so far:
The laptop has really nice blue lights. However, you can't turn them off and if you leave your laptop plugged in they stay on. So, you must unplug the laptop to get the lights off. Very odd. Also, there is a Bluetooth button but the laptop does NOT have Bluetooth. I had to purchase a USB BT adapter separately. The finger print reader is useless. There is a lot of plastic on this thing. It attracts hair and dust and feels a bit cheap. I hope it lasts. Also, you can't open the laptop with one hand. Though there is no latch it is very difficult to open the hood, so to say, with one hand. Vista is horrible. It took forever to update and it is so complex. I couldn't imagine anyone who is not computer savvy to just pick up Vista and go.
Overall I love this computer and hope it lasts forever! It replaced my Vaio that costs me $2000 six years ago and has nothing even comparable specs wise. How things change........

4 out of 5 stars Lot of laptop for the money   September 26, 2008

I bought the Acer Aspire 6920 after looking at several laptops. I was instantly drawn to the great styling, bright, wide 16" screen, plus the 4 gigs of RAM and Vista Home Premium 64-bit and the price was right: $700 after $50 rebate (that I received). This laptop is setup for movies, but is capable in other areas as well, including gaming (though don't expect high graphic settings in the latest games) and wireless internet. I was on the internet a few seconds after setting up Vista (that took about 20 mins).

The Acer 6920 has a touch pad, called Media Console (besides the normal mouse touch pad), that controls whatever audio or video is playing. You can control the volume, chapters in a movie, start, stop, pause, etc. with the touch of your finger. At first, I thought this was just a redundancy of what you can do on the screen, but have found it very useful. Instead of moving the mouse cursor and clicking on start, stop, pause, etc. all you have to do is touch the Media Console icons which is much quicker.

There's a built-in web cam, lots of USB ports and a DL DVD writer. I particularly like the 'pebbled' touchpad that I find easier to use than the smooth type, though this is personal preference. The sound is adequate, but nothing to write home about. Even though it's supposed to have a built-in subwoofer and I've made sure it's on I can't hear any deep bass notes (though I'd imagine it would be hard to fit a subwoofer in the confines of a laptop).

Something that excited and somewhat concerned me was the 64-bit operating system. Though I knew a 64-bit OS was better than 32-bit (like the difference between a two-lane and four-lane highway) and Vista 64-bit was supposed to be backwards compatible with 32-bit programs, I found some software will not run. Though there was more SW that would run than wouldn't and there was nothing I 'had to have' that wouldn't run.

The Acer Aspire 6920 is a fine, capable laptop and for $700, or less, a good deal.
